Lighting sets the mood and tone of every space. One of the most transformative tools in interior design is accent lighting, which is designed to draw attention to a particular area or object.
What is accent lighting?
Accent lighting highlights features such as artwork, textured walls, shelves, plants or architectural details. It works best when it is layered with general (ambient) lighting and task lighting.
Where to use it
- Living room: wall washers or spotlights on artwork and feature walls.
- Kitchen: under-cabinet strips that light up counters and add depth.
- Bedroom: soft cove lighting or wall lamps for a relaxed evening mood.
- Shelves and niches: LED strips to show off decor and books.
Simple tips
Choose warm white light for cosy spaces, use dimmers wherever possible, and avoid pointing lights directly at glossy surfaces where they create glare. A few well-placed accent lights usually make a bigger difference than adding more ceiling lights.
